Every week I make another batch of cookies for my husband's lunch. Yesterday he told the story of how he shared his cookies with a couple other people and was told "I didn't know a white girl could cook this good!" So thank you, thank you! I am quite honored. Really, I am. But I must not take the credit. I follow a recipe...the BEST recipe...
Thick and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
adapted from America's Test Kitchen
Ingredients:
2 cups plus 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
12 Tbsp (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted & cooled until warm
1 c brown sugar, packed
1/2 c granulated sugar
1 large egg plus 1 yolk
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
Directions:
-Adjust oven racks to upper & lower -middle positions & heat oven to 325. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
-Whisk dry ingredients together; set aside.
-With electric mixer, or by hand, mix butter & sugars until thoroughly combined.
-Beat in egg, yolk and vanilla until combined.
-Add dry ingredients & beat at low speed just until combined. Stir in chips.
-Roll scant 1/2 cup dough into ball. Holding dough ball in fingertips of both hands, pull into 2 equal halves. Rotate halves 90 degrees and, with jagged surfaces facing up, place formed dough onto cookie sheet, leaving ample room between each ball.
-Bake, reversing position of cookie sheets halfway through baking, until cookies are light golden brown and outer edges start to harden yet centers are still soft & puffy (about 17 minutes in my oven).
-Cool cookies on sheets until able to lift without breaking and place on wire rack to cool.
Makes about 24 give or take how much batter you eat before they get in the oven! ;)

God, I love these cookies. Do we even know who DID come up with the recipe?
Faith - they are ATK. And of course if you are reffering to who got them started on the board: it was the ATK queen herself. Moi! lol.
These were the best Chocolate Chip cookies I've ever made! They actually came out looking beautiful (puffy and golden and thick) rather than thin and too crispy. Thanks so much for the recipe!
Mmmmm so yummy!!!! Thank you for posting this recipe! I probably would have had alot more, had I not been *forced* to try the dough prior to baking!
Andrea :)
I'll definitely try these! Love your purple Kitchenaid :)
thanks for posting this. i love trying out new chocolate chip recipes.
just out of curiosity, what is the reasoning behind the step of rolling the dough, pulling them apart, then placing them on the sheet jagged side up?
I will definitely have to test drive this recipe.
I made a mutant version of these for my DH's birthday. I say mutant because it included wheat flour and splenda. However, we managed to inhale all of them in less then 6 hours. Lol. Thanks for sharing these. :)
made these last night, (used splenda) and they were terrific. i'm going to use this recipe from now on, thanks!
These were so wonderful! I will never make chocolate chip cookies another way again. I'm trying the fudge brownies tonight!
I just made these right now for comopany that is coming over tonight.. they look amazing.. they smell amazing... clearly they are going to taste amazing!
I am so thankful that my friend showed me this site.
Hmmmmm . . . . I am a devoted follower of yours but don't think I've ever commented. I am going to have to try this recipe. Why? Because I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that I have the best chocolate chip cookie recipe in the world. It's been given the distinction of being named "everything a cookie should be." I would swear on my dead pug's grave (not that she has one) that I have the best. I am always on the lookout for fantastic recipes and would gladly throw out my recipe if yours turns out to be better.
Thank you for all the GREAT posts :-)
i can't wait to go downstairs RIGHT now and make these thank youuu!!
Um...I just made these tonight. You are right. They are the BEST chocolate chip cookies. SO GOOD. SO GOOOOOOD!!!! Thank you for sharing!
Yay! I made these yesterday to send in a care package & took some left overs to work and everyone raved about them. I love how they looked "professional" and not like I just read the recipe off the back of the choco chips bag!
Thanks for the recipe! Definitely a keeper!
Oh my goodness! I just found this recipe in my American Classics magazine and made it for the first time two weeks ago. What a coincidence. But, let me tell you my boyfriend loved them!!! In fact, he passed them out to his dad and friends. They all say that these chocolate chip cookies are better than any they have ever tasted. A full batch lasts two days in our house. The only adjustment that I make is with the chocolate chips. Instead of using all semi sweet, I add half milk chocolate. This makes them that much better:) A deffffinite must try.
Oh My Goodness!!! I just pulled these cookies out of the oven and oh my goodness, they are so yummy!!! I have been on the hunt for a really good CCC recipes and this is the one! I love them these are the best!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
My younger sister has worked for ATK for a couple years now I think and got me a few of their cookbooks last year. I just made the cookies from the recipe in it and it's a bit different in the quantities of the ingredients. Makes me wonder if they revise the recipes every once in awhile or something.
This recipe is fabulous! My husband is a chocolate chip cookie connoisseur, and he doesn't even want to buy chocolate chip cookies any more after eating these! I made some for a Christmas party and they were gone in minutes. I added some peanut butter chips in with the chocolate chips and they were very yummy.
